A Conon Bridge man has been jailed for a year after tearing a piece of wood from a fence and throwing it at two people who had come to see what he was doing.

James Stewart appeared for sentence by video link at Inverness Sheriff Court after the 27-year=old previously admitted assaulting a custody officer by spitting at her and abusive behaviour towards the pair.

Sheriff Sara Matheson had been told that Stewart hit a man on the foot as he stood in Windsor Place at 12.15am on July 14, 2022.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told the court: "He was shouting and behaving in an angry manner and appeared to be attacking the garden fence.

"Neighbours asked what he was doing and he shouted and swore at the man and woman, saying things like: 'Get back in your house, bitch.'

"He also said: 'I will put the fence in a million bits' and 'I will tear your house to f...ing bits.'

"He tore a piece of wood from the fence and was remonstrating with it towards the pair, threw it and it hit the man on the foot.

"They returned to the house, locked the door and phoned the police." Mr Weir added.

Sheriff Matheson heard that Stewart was taken into custody later that day at Burnett Road Police Station.

Mr Weir went on: "A custody officer attended his cell to conduct a welfare check and he spat at her through the hatch, connecting with her face and eyes.

"She was upset but did not suffer any health issues."

Defence solicitor David Patterson said: "His life was spiralling out of control but there has been a drastic improvement since then.

"He is finding real benefit by engaging in what is on offer in the prison setting."
