INVERGORDON residents showed their anger over a rubbish incinerator planned for their town by taking part in a protest outside Highland Council headquarters in Inverness on Thursday. Local residents say they do not want Invergordon, which is trying to rebrand itself as a clean, green tourist port, spoiled by having a incinerator for all the Highlands' waste in its midst.

And Cromarty Firth Highland councillors Maxine Smith and Martin Rattray say they are "furious" over a bid by fellow Councillor Carolyn Wilson to reverse an earlier planning decision refusing consent for an extension to the council's current waste transfer station in the town. "This is an outrageous departure from local democracy and justice," said Cllr Smith. Cllr John Laing, chairman of the council's TEC Services committee and who is supporting Cllr Wilson's move, met protesters before Thursday's TECS meeting to hear their concerns. The bid to overturn the waste station extension, and the incinerator, will not be debated until August. Related articles: |
