A CLIMBER was swept to his death in an avalanche in Ross-shire in a week which also claimed two other lives in large snowslides in Scotland.

Chris Astill (54) from Tideswell in Derbyshire was rescued from Liathach Ridge, Torridon in Wester Ross after being avalanched on the peak last Wednesday morning. He was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter but later died of his injuries. Thirty-seven-year-old college lecturer Rupert Rosedale from Wiltshire, and 34-year-old Inverness geography teacher William Wilkinson, died after being caught in an avalanche on Ben Nevis. A spokesman for the Scottish Avalanche Information Service said the risk of avalanche on Wester Ross mountains continued to be high. |
